New standards bring hand protection into the 21st century

The International Safety Equipment Association (ISEA) has published updated standards to help in the selection of hand protection. OSHA has mandated that workers must wear protective gloves in cases where they may be exposed to workplace hazards, but its original recommendations based selection on performance characteristics of gloves. Based on the OSHA rules from 2000, gloves were rated as good, fair or poor, which proved to be an inconsistent and imprecise measurement, at best.

Revised standards rank gloves on a numbered scale, and performance and pass/fail criteria are given for such things as resistance to cut, puncture, heat and abrasion. Also new in 2005 were standard tests for vibration reduction and dexterity. Overall, classifications have been updated to reflect the state of the glove-maker's art, new materials and technologies.

The new ANSI/ISEA 105-2005 standard was drafted by members of the ISEA hand protection group which included many of the companies whose products are included here...
