Ground Penetrating Radar: More Than Meets the Eye

St. Petersburg, Florida -- The Concrete Sawing & Drilling Association (CSDA) announces the release of a new Best Practice document entitled Ground Penetrating Radar for Concrete Scanning (CSDA-BP-007). This is the 24th in a series of Standards, Specifications, Tolerances and Best Practice documents produced by CSDA. The association continues to provide proactive Best Practices for sawing and drilling contractors and developing tools, techniques and procedures to help them deal with issues crucial to growing businesses and maintaining operator safety.

The 10-page Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) Best Practice, produced by the Standards and Specifications Committee, is intended to provide information on the main principles of GPR while giving guidance on the methods used and the correct use of scanning equipment. The document also provides contractors with practical considerations when performing scans, and useful advice on the limitations of the equipment.

"We have seen the need in the industry for systematic education in use of GPR technology. We believe that this Best Practice will help CSDA members and others adopt the use of this technology and result in safer and more cost effective cutting and coring," says CSDA Standards and Specifications Committee member Greg Summers of Sensors & Software.

The proper use and interpretation of GPR data is of growing importance in the concrete sawing and drilling industry. By correctly scanning and identifying areas of concealed rebar and other materials embedded in concrete, a contractor can prepare and navigate operators through a job site and avoid unnecessary disruption of the works or possible injuries. Matthew Dragon of Geophysical Survey Systems, Inc. says, "The CSDA Best Practice does an excellent job of providing a comprehensive overview of GPR theory and practice for the concrete coring industry, and reinforces the need for equipment manufacturer training."

By releasing a Best Practice on the principles and advantages of GPR, it is clear that there is more to CSDA than meets the eye. The association does not just focus on the core elements of sawing and drilling, but also on the range of new services and technologies offered by its members.
